Social Security Wage Base Rises to $192,300 in 2027

The Social Security Administration has announced that the taxable wage base will increase to $192,300 on January 1, 2027, up from $184,500 in 2026. That is a $7,800 increase, or about 4.2% beginning in 2027. By comparison, the base standard deduction for married filing jointly taxpayers rises by only $700, or 2.2% beginning in 2027, meaning the social security wage base continues to be increased similar to previous years faster than the standard deduction for upper income earners and their employers having to absorb a bigger payroll tax hit while continuing to get smaller tax breaks on their personal returns.
The tax rate stays at 6.2% for both employee and employer. The higher cap still costs more for higher earners and the businesses that employ them.
2026 | 2027 | Change | |
Taxable wage base | $184,500 | $192,300 | +$7,800 |
Maximum employee OASDI tax | $11,439.00 | $11,922.60 | +$483.60 |
Maximum employer OASDI tax | $11,439.00 | $11,922.60 | +$483.60 |
Combined maximum per employee | $22,878.00 | $23,845.20 | +$967.20 |
What this means for you
- Employees earning $192,300 or more will see $483.60 more withheld for Social Security next year, with the extra withholding hitting later in the year as pay crosses the old threshold.
- Employers carry the same $483.60 increase for each employee at or above the cap, so the cost grows with every high earner on payroll.
- Medicare tax is not capped, so it is not affected by this change.
Action items before January 1
- Confirm your payroll software or provider has updated to the $192,300 wage base.
- Notify affected employees that more of their pay will be subject to withholding.
- Update 2027 payroll cost projections and budgets, especially if you employ several high earners.
